Community foundations are uniquely positioned to bridge the gap between donor intent and community need—but too often, competitive grantmaking and donor funds operate in parallel rather than in partnership. This session explores how our team has intentionally connected those systems to expand grantmaking impact and deepen donor engagement. Using a practical, step-by-step approach, we will share how we leverage our CRM and grants management tools to tag nonprofit organizations and applications by interest area, track giving across donor-advised and field-of-interest funds, and build internal dashboards that reveal alignment between community needs and donor priorities. This approach allows us to do two things: match competitive grant applications with aligned existing funds, and partner with larger field-of-interest fund holders to co-create or expand grantmaking programs around emerging needs. Through this work, we are able to stretch competitive dollars further while offering donors more meaningful, mission-aligned opportunities to engage. We will walk through the workflow behind this model—from application intake to donor outreach and program development—along with early outcomes, including increased co-funding and more strategic deployment of grant dollars. The session will also highlight key lessons learned, including how to define which opportunities are appropriate for donor engagement, how to identify donors who are receptive to this approach, and how to ensure strong communication with applicants throughout the process. Participants will leave with practical strategies to better align donor resources with community priorities, ultimately strengthening both grantmaking effectiveness and the donor experience.
