High Consequence Infection Diseases in Minnesota: What do we do when Ebola comes to town?

Tori Nemitz has been a Medical Laboratory Scientist since 2017. She spent 5 years as a generalist on the night shift at United hospital. In 2021, Tori stumbled into point of care testing at United Hospital where she slowly took on more responsibilities in system point of care testing. In 2025, Tori made the leap from technical to management as the Point of Care Technical Supervisor at M Health Fairview's University of Minnesota Medical Center. Tori is now the Point of Care Supervisor of a small team responsible 6500 operators and 600+ instruments. As part of her responsibilities Tori helps manage the Special Pathogens unit at UMMC. This unit is responsible for taking patients who are confirmed or suspected of having a high consequense infection disease. The limited-service laboratory is funded by the Department of Defense and provides critical testing on 8 instruments. There are currently 21 laboratory volunteers and counting who would help operate this unit if it is activated.
